Unauthorised schools functioning, action being taken: Maha Minister in Assembly

Mumbai: State Minister of School Education Dadaji Bhuse on Wednesday admitted in the Assembly that it was partially true that unauthorised schools were currently functioning in Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra without government approval. The minister, in a written reply to a question raised by member Bhaskar Jadhav in connection with the functioning of unauthorised schools, said the punitive action has been taken against 103 of the total 420 unauthorised schools from the Mumbai region. The criminal offence has been registered against 126 such schools, while 47 unauthorised schools have been closed down. In the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation area, a total of 1,057 grant and non-grant schools are currently functioning as per the approval given by the civic body's education committee from time to time, he said. The minister said that of the 1,057 schools, 218 schools had not taken permission in 2022 for renewal or continuation of the renewal certificate. Currently, of the 218 schools, 211 have been granted permission under the Right to Education (RTE), while seven schools have been closed. Minister Bhuse said the government has periodically issued directives for taking action against unauthorised schools. The government proposes to initiate action against such unauthorised schools functioning before and after 2013 for non-compliance with the government decision dated March 10, 2010 and under the Unauthorised Schools and Maharashtra Self-Financed Schools (Establishment and Regulation) Rules 2012. In addition, the government has instructed to close down such unauthorised schools not comply with the necessary criteria. However, the instructions have also been issued to accommodate students from such unauthorised schools in the nearby schools to avoid loss to them. The minister said the government has received a proposal from the School Education Commissioner to close down 85 unauthorised schools in the BMC area. The proposal is under the government's consideration. Meanwhile, Industry Minister Uday Samant, in his reply to a calling attention motion moved by member Mahesh Sawant, said that instructions will be given to the BMC administration to provide funds for the Mahim Mori Road Municipal School building in the G/North zone of the civic body. Minister Samant said the Mahim Mori Road Municipal School in the G/North zone of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation was a 4-storey building with a ground floor and three floors. This building was inspected on September 28, 2020, and the school building was classified as C-1 (dangerous building). After that, the school building was evicted. He said the proposal for the reconstruction of this school was being sent for approval to the Mumbai Fire Brigade and Building Proposals (Special Cell), and this work has been planned to be undertaken in the financial year 2025-2026. The total enrollment of the four schools in the Mahi Mori Road Municipal School building in the year 2019-20 was 1,568. As this school building was vacated, both Mahim Mori Road Urdu schools, number one and two, were shifted to the R.C. Church Mahim school building. He also said that the remaining Marathi and English schools have been shifted to the New Mahim Municipal School.

Kerala HC closes case, MoS Suresh Gopi's film to release tomorrow

Kochi: After weeks of legal wrangling and uncertainty, Union Minister of State for Tourism and BJP leader Suresh Gopi's latest film, Janaki. V vs State of Kerala, on Wednesday, has finally been cleared for release by the Kerala High Court. The court has said that the prime grievance of the petitioner now stands redressed. The film will be released on Thursday. On July 12, all the decks was cleared when the film received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film, originally titled "Janaki vs State of Kerala", ran into trouble when the CBFC objected to the use of the name "Janaki" in the title, citing concerns under Section 5B(2) of the Cinematograph Act. The production company challenged the decision in the Kerala High Court, initiating a legal battle that drew considerable public attention. Following three rounds of hearings, the producers of the film, initially unwilling to change the title, agreed to a slight modification, renaming the film "Janaki. V vs State of Kerala" during the July 9 hearing. The production team's counsel, Rajya Sabha MP Haris Beeran, said the compromise was a mutual decision after both parties opted for a softer approach. Initially, the CBFC had proposed 96 cuts to the film, but after multiple rounds of discussion, that number was reduced to just two. Additionally, two film dialogues were muted. The re-edited version was resubmitted on Saturday, and the CBFC promptly granted certification to the film, which was initially slated for release on June 27. During the July 2 hearing, Justice N. Nagaresh had remarked that the CBFC's objection to the name "Janaki" was unwarranted. "She is not a rapist. If a rapist were named Rama, Krishna, or Janaki, then I could understand the concern. But here, she is the heroine, a survivor seeking justice," the judge observed, defending the creative choice. With this the case has come to a close and now all eyes are on how the film will fare at the box office as more than adequate pre-publicity has already been received.

Cabinet eases investment rules for NLCIL to fast-track green energy drive

New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved a special exemption for NLC India Limited (NLCIL) from the prevailing investment guidelines applicable to Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprises. This strategic decision enables NLCIL to invest Rs.7,000 crore in its wholly-owned subsidiary, NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL) and, in turn, NIRL investing in various projects directly or through formation of Joint Ventures, without the requirement of prior approval under the existing delegation of powers, according to an official statement issued after the CCEA meeting. This investment is further exempted from the 30 per cent net worth ceiling stipulated by the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) for overall investment by Central public sector enterprises (CPSEs) in JVs and subsidiaries providing NLCIL and NIRL greater operational and financial flexibility, the statement explained. The exemptions aim to support NLCIL's ambitious target of developing 10.11 GW of Renewable Energy (RE) capacity by 2030 and expanding this to 32 GW by 2047. The approval aligns with India's commitments made during COP26 for transition toward a low-carbon economy and achieve sustainable development. The country has pledged to build 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030 as part of the 'Panchamrit' goals and its long-term commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2070, the statement said. As a significant power utility and Navratna CPSE, NLCIL is playing a pivotal role in this transition. Through this investment, NLCIL seeks to substantially expand its renewable energy portfolio and contribute meaningfully to national and global climate action objectives. At present, NLCIL operates seven renewable energy assets with a total installed capacity of 2 GW, which are either operational or close to commercial operation. These assets will be transferred to NIRL pursuant to this Cabinet approval. NIRL, envisioned as the flagship platform for NLCIL's green energy initiatives, is actively exploring fresh opportunities across the renewable energy sector, including participation in competitive bidding for new projects. The approval is expected to reinforce India's position as a green energy leader by reducing dependence on fossil fuels, lowering coal import, and enhancing reliability of 24x7 power supply across the country. Beyond the environmental impact, this initiative is projected to generate significant employment—both direct and indirect—during the construction and operation phases, thereby benefiting local communities and supporting inclusive economic growth, the statement added.

Meta Fixes AI Privacy Bug That Exposed User Chats, Awards ₹8.5 Lakh to Ethical Hacker

Meta has resolved a critical privacy flaw in its AI chatbot platform that could have exposed users' private conversations to malicious actors. The vulnerability, flagged late last year, was responsibly disclosed by ethical hacker Sandeep Hodkasia, who was awarded a bug bounty of $10,000 (roughly ₹8.5 lakh) for his discovery. According to a report by TechCrunch, Hodkasia—founder of the cybersecurity firm AppSecure—reported the issue to Meta on December 26, 2024. The flaw, linked to the prompt editing feature in Meta's AI assistant, had the potential to allow unauthorized access to personal prompts and responses from other users. Meta users interacting with the AI platform can edit or regenerate prompts. These prompts, along with AI-generated replies, are each assigned a unique identification number (ID) by Meta's backend system. Hodkasia found that these IDs, which were visible through browser developer tools, followed a predictable pattern and were vulnerable to manipulation. 'I was able to view prompts and responses of other users by manually changing the ID in the browser's network activity panel,' Hodkasia explained. The major issue, he pointed out, was that Meta's system didn't verify whether the requester of a particular prompt actually owned it. That meant someone with modest technical knowledge could write a script to cycle through IDs, collecting sensitive user data at scale. The ease with which this vulnerability could be exploited made it particularly dangerous. Since the system lacked user-specific access checks, it effectively opened a backdoor to private AI conversations. Thankfully, Hodkasia chose to report the issue rather than exploit it. Meta confirmed it patched the flaw on January 24, 2025, following an internal review. The company also stated that there was no evidence suggesting the vulnerability had been exploited before Hodkasia's report. While the fix has been deployed, the incident has renewed concerns about data privacy in AI platforms. As tech giants race to roll out AI-powered products to stay ahead of the competition, lapses like this highlight the growing importance of robust security protocols. Meta launched its AI assistant and a standalone app earlier this year to compete with platforms like ChatGPT. However, its rollout has not been without issues. In recent months, some users reported that their supposedly private conversations were visible in the platform's public Discovery feed. Although Meta maintains that chats are private by default and only become public when explicitly shared, users argue that the app's interface and settings are confusing. Many claimed they were unaware that their personal inputs, including photos or prompts, might become publicly accessible. As AI tools become more integrated into daily life, incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of the need for transparency, user control, and stringent privacy protections. Meta's swift response and bug bounty program underscore the critical role of ethical hackers in maintaining digital safety.
